Caladesi Island

Originally part of a larger barrier island, Caladesi Island was created in 1921 when a hurricane cut Hurricane Pass to divide the larger island into two parts. The north part became Hog Island (Later renamed Honeymoon Island) and the South end became Caladesi.  Although Caladesi is still referred to as a separate island, Hurricane Elena filled in Dunedin Pass in 1985, making Caladesi Island accessible by walking northward from North Clearwater Beach. Just east of the northern tip of the island there is a huge sandbar that is accessible at lower tides, and is a popular destination for local boaters, especially those who like to bring their dogs out since there is plenty of space for them to run, and no rules against dogs like many of the other island destinations. Halfway between the north end of Caladesi and Clearwater Beach end there is a marina with access to a three-mile nature trail, picnic pavilions, bathhouses, a park concession stand, and a the world famous beach. All accessible only by boat, or a 3 mile walk from Clearwater Beach.

Stephen Leatherman, better known as “Dr. Beach,” cited Caladesi’s “crystalline quartz sand” and “sparkling clear waters” as reasons why the secluded spot is No. 6 on his list of top 10 beaches for 2020. It also made the list several times in past years including 2018, and 2019. The whole island is part of the Caladesi Island State Park, but if you travel there with Phil Good Tours we will cover your entrance fee at the marina, or you can choose to anchor up on the Gulf side, Hurricane Pass, or at the sand bar (at lower tides).

YES! I WANT TO GO HERE, CAPTAIN PHIL!
